Beckham Law / Special Expat Tax Regime
Does Beckham Law apply to self-employed workers (autónomos)?
Traditionally, no. Beckham Law was originally designed for employees relocating to Spain and generally excluded self-employed workers. This is why many advisers and online resources still state that autónomos cannot qualify.
However, Spain's 2023 Startup Law (Law 28/2022) expanded eligibility in certain circumstances. Some entrepreneurs and certain highly qualified professionals may now qualify for the special tax regime, even when operating as self-employed workers. The expansion was intended to attract talent and support Spain's startup ecosystem, not to extend Beckham Law to all autónomos.
The more accurate question today is whether a particular self-employed activity falls into one of the newly eligible categories. This is an evolving area — seek professional advice before relying on eligibility.
